PLASTIC PASSION is our eco-ethical solution to avoid polluting the environment

PLASTIC PASSION is our eco-ethical solution to avoid polluting the environment

We are a company, which this year (2019) has begun to produce plastic ice cream sticks and coffee spoons, and which has been producing plastic accessories for clothing, shirts and leather goods since 1958. We firmly believe that the environment is a temple to be respected, and that Mother Nature must be protected. Our mission is to manufacture products that we dare to define as “quality waste” using zero-impact manufacturing techniques, because it is not plastic in itself that destroys the environment, but rather human carelessness, negligence and incivility, which creates pollution and destroys our landscapes.

Not all plastic can be replaced

The real problem is not so much the materials used for production, but rather how we subsequently use those materials. For this reason, it can be considered a behavioural issue. It is also important to understand that not all plastics can be replaced in our specific sector by other degradable bioplastics, insofar as their levels of hardness and resistance are insufficient for the production of highly technical and functional products. We receive countless requests in this regard, even if the EU has banned ONLY SINGLE-USE PLASTICS by 2021.

What is biodegradable plastic?

Bioplastics are those materials made from both renewable and fossil sources, which are biodegradable (90% decomposition within 6 months: the remaining 10% does not decompose, but is deposited on the ground for life in the form of invisible particles), or compostable (decomposition within 3 months and not visible). Certain bioplastics are made using the starch of corn, wheat, tapioca, potato, potato peel, cellulose, sugarcane and many other types of grains.

All this entails a series of reflections and critique regarding the disadvantages of producing new plastics:

The use of land (scarce in nature) and water to cultivate potential food, which will then be used for an entirely different purpose (while also wasting food and water that could stem the entire world's hunger and thirst).

Still on the topic of sustainability, the energy, fertilisers and water needed to cultivate the primary plant materials which then need to be transformed into plastic, currently represent an insurmountable problem, not to mention the costs associated with transporting the primary materials and the finished product, as well as the economic and environmental costs tied to the production process.

Europe is currently striving toward the adoption of a circular economy, therefore the reuse of alternative primary materials originating from secondary industrial, agricultural or food production flows.

Are some plastic products and accessories more ecological than others?

Ironically, there are some accessories, which, if produced in plastic, are more ecological with respect to those produced using other materials. One example is our patented “Crossed-arm plastic clips”, which replace the nickel-plated metal version (the plastic injection moulding process is much more ecological than the nickel-plating process), or our patented plastic ice cream sticks, which were designed to replace those in wood (plastic replacing an element found in nature!). . See the illustrations and comments on our website www.pirsafa.com.

Why is it important to treat any type of material with an eco-ethical conscience?

Company ethics are no doubt the best resource with which to develop a production approach that aims to eradicate polluting waste. It is not so much the material used by the company that matters, but rather how it is transformed by the company and how any processing waste is disposed of. This is the deciding factor differentiating a genuinely sustainable company from others. The decision to use plastic is normally disputed by environmentalists, but it is the approach to production that needs to be controlled, and our conscience that needs to be educated in order to respect and safeguard the environment.

The information provided by the media on this topic is insufficient and partial and penalises those who use, produce and work with plastic, making them out to be monstrous polluting demons.

If plastic were to be utilised within its circuit, the facts would be quite different insofar as it would be recycled down to the very last gram, without leaving any invisible residue on the ground, another issue poorly addressed and poorly explained by the media. All materials used, regardless of their nature, must be processed and disposed of with an eco-ethical conscience.

We process plastics intelligently!

This is something we have always known. Our company only works in respect of the environment and has always done so intelligently, in fact, our slogan is: plastic passion!

What does processing plastics intelligently mean?

The first way of preventing pollution is to make zero-km choices, that is, to purchase products within our own territory (municipality, province, region, other regions and Italy), moving further away to search for partners only when local searches fail to deliver positive results in terms of the quality of processing and services.

We have always reused our own internal plastic waste, even though there's very little of it, because the aim has always been to eliminate it at the source. All prototyping of new products is always based on a prior analysis to reduce the weight with respect to the previous version. The main production of our products does not generate waste, and even if it did, it would be in truly minimal quantities. Over the years, we have invested in new types of moulds, making an immediate ecological contribution: that of eliminating waste and using only first-choice plastics, specifically certified for foodstuffs.

Another contribution to the environment involves the use of steel moulds, treated to prevent the use of oils, additives and lubricants. There is nothing to clean and no special hazardous waste is produced.

The third contribution to our planet is that of having replaced 80% of our hydraulic injection presses with energy efficient electrical presses.

The fourth contribution to the environment can be found in the recycling of the packaging in which the materials arrive; these are always reused for new outbound shipments.

The fifth contribution to differentiated waste sorting is the way we package the size markers in plastic bags without shipping labels. The details are written with a marker so that the packaging can be completely recycled without first needing to remove the paper label.

The sixth contribution to nature is our investment in equipment and machinery that produces double and three times as much as the previous ones, thus creating additional power savings. The internal heating in production areas is provided by recovering the heat produced by the refrigeration systems.

The seventh contribution to nature involves the upcoming development of a photovoltaic system, which will power the size marker production plant.

At PIR.SA.FA., we have always respected the environment with these small acts of passion!
